How to get around GameCity…

For three days Nottingham will be transformed into GameCity – a hive of gaming activity. If you’re new to town check out this quick guide to navigating some of the hotspots.

The Old Market Square – home to last year’s brilliant open air Wii tournament – is right at the heart of GameCity. Slap bang in the centre of Nottingham, it’s an easy walk to other venues and has got top-notch transport connections.

The tram runs right alongside it; running straight from the train station the tram can drop you off at the aptly-named Old Market Square stop. Buses are equally easy to negotiate – you can get almost everywhere in Nottingham from bus stops that are less than a five minute walk away. It’s a pedestrianised space that is accessible to all and just a two minute walk will get you to Gatecrasher (although don’t quote us on that, we don’t know how fast you walk…) Cyclists aren’t allowed on the Square itself, but there are cycle racks just up the road outside Waterstones and a good network of cycle paths to get you there.

As you’ve probably guessed Gatecrasher, which hosted our excellent launch party, is pretty easy to get to too. There are bus stops around the corner and the Old Market Square – complete with tram stop – down the road.

Mogul-e-Azam, official curry supplier to GameCity is again hosting several events. The tram is the best way to get there – the Royal Centre stop is the closest to it – although it isn’t far from bus stops and if you follow the tram line down the hill you’ll be at the Old Market Square in no time.

So far we’ve not mentioned specific bus routes – there are so many passing by GameCity venues it’d be a tough job to list them all. Just use www.triptimes.co.uk the online journey planner to work out which bus to get. Triptimes can plan your whole journey – including walking to and from bus stops or if it’d be quicker to use the tram – with helpful maps. All you have to do is type in where you’re starting from and going to and it does the rest for you.

Public transport in Nottingham is brilliant value– there are loads of different ticket options to suit your journey. For complete flexibility get a Kangaroo card priced £3.40. You get a day of unlimited travel on all buses (run by any operator), trams and trains within the City area (check out www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/publictransport.htm to find out how far that takes you).

If you don’t need the freedom to hop on any form of public transport that comes your way here are some other options:

A CityRider priced £3.00 will give unlimited travel on all NCT buses and the tram – just make sure you only need to use NCT buses before you buy. Trent Barton – Nottingham’s other main bus provider – does their own day ticket the Zigzag costing £4.40 for unlimited travel after 9am. And if you’re happy to just use the tram buy an all day ticket for £2.70
